Smartphones play an increasingly important role in your computer network. The interesting thing is that many of our clients still think of them as “cell phones” and don’t even consider them a part of their networks. The fact is these little devices can be your biggest vulnerability if not handled appropriately.
Imagine if one of your employees lost his Smartphone and didn’t report it right away because he didn’t realize that it was important. Now imagine that this employee worked in HR and was saving employee Social Security Numbers in Outlook contact records for easy access. This information is now available to anyone who picks up that device and the company is liable for any data theft that results.
-- UPDATE: New class is posted here --
I'm feverishly planning the next class at Promethius University. The topic will be "YouTube Integration - Cast a More Effective Marketing Net." We're shooting for on or about September 30th. Please check back soon for details.
In the mean time, please enjoy this brief example of a great use of YouTube video. Joel Fuhrman has masterfully used the power of online video to promote his medical practice and his many books and videos. We'll be covering his and several other powerful YouTube success stories.
For all of you who’ve been waiting for the release of Office 2010 before making the jump from Office XP or Office 2003, your wait is over. The good news is that you saved all that dough by not upgrading to Office 2007. The bad news is that there really isn’t much difference between Office 2007 and 2010. If you’re already using Office 2007, I can foresee very few cases where an upgrade to 2010 would be necessary.
While it is far from new, cloud computing is finally beginning to change the world in the ways it has been promising to for years. Companies all over the world are simplifying their internal computer networks and, in many cases, saving money by hosting their files and applications remotely.
I would like to once again thank everyone who joined me for our “Windows 7: Should You Make the Switch?” seminar. It was a small group that covered a broad range of industries and LAN/WAN setups. We were represented by folks in the healthcare, insurance, engineering, not-for-profit and construction fields. We had representatives of computer networks ranging in size from one to fifty users.
The course was designed for network/IT budget administrators to help them make informed decisions regarding Windows 7. If you would like some information on upgrading to Windows 7, but weren’t able to make it to the seminar, please give me a call at 317-733-2388.
Our clients often ask us what we would do if the decision was ours. Since this question seems to arise most often during discussions of home computers, I thought I’d offer a run-down of some of the recent decisions I have made for my home computer.
The evidence I have is purely anecdotal, but it seems to me that the current IT trend among our clients is to buck their own IT trends. Promethius has been making a concerted effort to educate our clients about new trends and possibilities for efficiency using the latest technology. An unexpected, but welcome, shift recently has been that our clients are arriving at the meetings prepared to educate us on their ideas for streamlining their business practices through IT. Often a great deal of homework has been done to examine alternatives. This is light years ahead of the “I think it may be time to replace Suzie’s laptop” that was the norm just a couple of years ago.
We seem to be firing on all cylinders here at Promethius Consulting of Indianapolis. Web design and computer networking orders keep pouring in, which is good news. The not-so-good news is that we’re a bit tired.
We’re looking for some bright and cheery individual to join our Indianapolis team in an administrative capacity. We provide a fast-paced environment with plenty of challenge and diversity. No single day is quite like the one before.
If this sounds appealing, we’d love to have you apply for our position so we can get back to doing what we do best: building great websites and providing superior computer network support!
At least twice a month we field a customer question about how to dispose of their old computers, monitors, printers, etc. While our answer has remained pretty much the same over the years (i.e. give them to us and we’ll find a solution), at least once every couple of years we have to find a new recycle center. It’s very difficult for re-manufacturers and recyclers to stay in business if they don’t charge for the collection of at least some items. Most make a living by salvaging the computers and monitors that actually work and re-selling them. In this scenario, collecting the true scrap is a sort of expensive loss leader.
You have a Twitter account, you're on Facebook, you blog a bit, but do you really have a plan? Do you consistently execute that plan? Our class will go in-depth into the detailed plans and daily practices of a champion social networker.
